Mocean365 attends "Boot Cancer" competition in St Albans Vermont.

The Mocean365 crew just got back from the 2010 Boot Cancer Event in St Albans, Vermont with some awards to go along with their sore muscles. The team was comprised of Jen Grant, Brad Grant, Angel Roy,  Chris Thompson, Megan Walsh and Skye Nacel along with the support crew of Bethany and Pierce Thompson and Pam Hansen.
The First event of the day was a circuit comprised of 1 minute of the following movements… rowing, pushups with hands elevated at bottom, box jumps/step ups, 30 meter shuttle run, and Kettlebell Thrusters. All were done consecutively until done with each round, where a one minute rest was allowed for a total of three rounds. The team pushed on hard through the burn.

The second event was Tire flipping and Sandbag carrying. The format was as follows.
25 meter tire flips, 25 meter sand bag carries and one 400 meter run.
Tires (200lbs for Men, 100lbs for Women)
Sandbags (60lbs for Men, 30lbs for Women)
Start:
Flip tire
Run back to start
Grab sandbag(s) (Men to carry two 30lb sandbags and Women carry one 30lb sandbag) and run to tire
Flip tire
Grab sandbag(s) and run
Run back
Flip tire
Run back
Grab sandbag(s) and run
Flip tire
Grab sandbag(s) and run
Now bring back all of your sandbags to the starting line (you can carry more than one)
Once all sandbags are across the starting line stacked in your tire, run 400 meters once
This turned out to be a very grueling but spectator friendly event with the whole crew yelling and screaming for their teams. Super fun! I was able to come in second overall in this event due to pounding a bunch of Mate minutes before my heat. Also being barefoot allowed me the freedom to maintain a rhythm that i may not have been able to do if i was shod.

Aaron Fondry  won the event overall and is a undefeated mixed martial artist who has some big upcoming fight so props to him for training hard and coming out on top. We’ll see if i can close the gap on him a bit next year?
Our team had the top fundraiser individual,Jen Grant and we were the top fund raising team overall. We even put some people on the podium too with Megan tied for second in her class while I somehow won my class and finished third overall for the event, not bad for an old surf bum eh.?  Big props to all of the team who set a goal, stuck with it and NEVER gave up!So proud of everyone on the team for their hard work and determination which is so f^&*%ing inspiring!!
We raised some money for cancer while spreading the word about movement  and set a team goal and completed it and heck maybe made some people give some thoughts to taking off the “foot condoms”(shoes), in the process?!
Big thanks to the organizer Lisa, all the volunteers and sponsors and spectators and to our great support crew Bethany and Pierce and friends and family who offered support and donations to the cause as well. We are already getting ready for next year!

Spartan Race, Burlington Vermont by Mocean365

Just got back from the inaugural Spartan Race in Burlington Vermont. Well actually in Williston Vermont at the Catamount Outdooor Center which served as an amazing venue for the sold out event. The course is a 5K course and is filled with challenges along the way including barb wire crawls, wall climbs, pond crossing's and much more. It was put on by the crew over at Peak Races who also put on the Death Race and many other insane events meant to test the limits of hardy women and men.
I got a few shots and some video in between having a go at the event. There are more pics on my galleries over on SmugMug here...http://mocean365.smugmug.com/Other/Spartan-Race-Burlington-Vt/12216329_XaL5i#870061030_8MXyc
I also cobbed together a little video of some of the action too here..

New Adventure Conditoning Camps

We will be starting new camps that will get everyone ready for ripping into spring and summer!

They will be on Tuesdays outside from 5-30- 7pm in Waterbury VT. The first camp called "Base Camp" is just that. Setting a base with general conditioning in a group setting outside. Nutrition work will be done by Roots Wise so you can get your machine running smooth. Movement and diet in one shot!

Work the body in all planes of movement as we prepare for the more challenging work to come. Lots of fun, play based moves as well that will have you laughing as you are challenged, imagine that?! No stuffy gyms here, just fresh air, the elements(snow, rain, or shine) and preparing our body so we can do the stuff we love better and longer. Like ride our bikes, ski/board, or maybe just chase around the kids and be generally more fit and healthy and prevent injuries before they happen.

Roots Wise will be adding nutrition consulting for all pre-registered participants so you can make the connection between what you eat and how you perform. We are very excited to help you with a full well rounded package that gets you outside and breathing the good air.

We are also pleased to have some great sponsors providing support in the surrounding community. The Alchemist, Vermont Peanut Butter, I-Ride, Five Hills Bikes, and IdeRide will be adding to the goodies with some discounts and schwag as well! Big thanks to all of them! Did we mention the camps are right next to the Alchemist so lots of good food after and maybe a cold drink!

Peak Races "Spartan Race" 2010

Peak Races is quickly become very renowned in the world of adventure and endurance racing for their challenging and at times, diabolical courses and events. As some of you may know, this past season  I traveled to Pittsfield Vt to compete in the Death Race along with my support crew/filmer etc, Vange Morse. The course was insane in every way and truly tested my limits.

Peak Races has many other races, all geared towards pushing you to the limit. The new and exciting one is called, The Spartan Race. The race series will be held all over the world with a local race happening at Bolton Valley on May 16th that some of us will be competing in. Think of this race as a "mini-Death Race sprint" with challenging and yet to be named obstacles and challenges. We will also offer this for the Boston event in October.

Mocean365 will be offering a 3 month "Warrior Training by Mocean365" to prepare people for this event. Included in this will be comprehensive a custom training program divided into 3 specific blocks with initial assessment and testing, a nutrition plan and consultation by our Nutrition and Wellness partner "Rootwise", 3 1 hour training sessions(one per month within one hour of Waterbury VT) unlimited text, phone and email support, discount on some of our partners gear such as Indo Board Balance Trainer's, Rubberbanditz resistance bands, F-Stop Gear, and 1 jar of Vermont Peanut Butter of your choice. You will also qualify for discounted Mocean365 Training classes and individual sessions!
Contact me for pricing and get on board because this will be limited to 10 people due to the amount of time and attention each person receives. mocean365@gmail.com

Keep in mind this will not only be limited to people in the race but would be a great way to fly into spring with new found conditioning and vigor! And for most this will serve as preparation for your Spartan Race either in Burlington(Bolton), Boston or BOTH! Get in the shape of your life while having fun!

peace

Check this amazing video and company out

My new friend JR Atwood, is a movement educator from California who has an infectious spirit and an intelligence that belies his years. He brought to my attention this great video and story of someone who has risen beyond adversity with hard work and dedication. The story is very inspiring and will hopefully have a positive influence in a world strife with inactivity and sedentary living(or dying). Check it out and let me know what you think.

The Time is NOW!

Back from a super fun weekend in Seattle with the Exuberant Animal crew laying down some exciting collective plans for inspiring movement. And this weekend has elevated the mission to a all new level! So below is lots of info not just from the Animals but from others. Take a few minutes. maybe skip your favorite show tonite and check out some stuff that has worked to keep my stoke, maybe it will for you as well?!

While i was a little banged up from some recent run in's with trees, icy trails and a nasty chest cold thingy, this weekend was still so amazing and fun and inspiring! It was my time to learn more and vibe off of some of the most amazing people in the world of physical movement that I've ever met. People that are driven to make a difference each and every day in their own way.

Some are authors like the chief of the tribe, Frank Forencich who has written many books on the topic of movement and breaking it down into basic, primal patterns with a focus on fun and play. An amazing person with a mission that is purely inspiring to so many of us.
Which doesn't mean easy by any means, it just means FUN. why the f^%k should't movement and "workouts" be fun? what is wrong with that? Nothing.
The Barefoot Sensei takes primal movement to a whole other level. A genuine, authentic warrior who spreads the gospel by example who is unencumbered by the stress and possessions of the modern world by choice, he is a Sensei in every meaning of the word.

And so many others throughout the weekend have left an indelible mark upon me and my own mission, and for this I'm grateful. And thanks to those who made the journey possible, Mahalos to you.

Josh Leeger  was another of the great personalities there this weekend who taught me many things in a short time and this am I was checking out his site as part of my daily quest for knowledge. On there I found a link to one of his friends sites, Ross Enamait who runs Ross Training and on there i found some really cool stuff including...gasp, cough, a video profiling Will Smith. Now many of you might think of Will as a Hollywood actor and make generalizations like i often do about that industry but look deeper. Will has some cool sh$t to say for sure.

also while on there found this great poem that speaks volumes..
It Couldn’t Be Done
By Edgar Guest
Somebody said it couldn’t be done,
But he with a chuckle replied
That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing and he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it.
Somebody scoffed: “Oh, you’ll never do that;
At least no one has ever done it”;
But he took off his coat and he took off his hat,
And the first thing we knew he’d begun it.
With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,
Without any doubting or quiddit,
He started to sing and he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it.
There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,
There are thousands to prophesy failure;
There are thousands to point out to you, one by one,
The dangers that wait to assail you.
But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,
Just take off your coat and go to it;
Just start to sing as you tackle the thing
That “cannot be done,” and you’ll do it.

And finally also got a great email this morning from the Northeast Kingdom protagonist of movement himself, Joe Fox.

In "A Mile in His Shoes" in this month's Runner's World, Marc Parent speaks of a study by Nicholas Christakis and James Fowler based on a 1947 Framingham Heart study. Says the article:

"They used the same data to make a startling discovery: Happiness is contagious, as are other good behaviors like quitting smoking and staying thin. These and their opposites- obesity, depression, and cigarettes with coffee- apear to spread between people as if they were viruses; groups of friends "infect" one another with good or bad habits."

It goes on to talk about a New York Times summary of the Christakis/ Fowler study...
"If you want to improve the world with your good behavior, math is on your side. For most of us, within three degrees we are connected to more than 1,000 people-all of whom we can theoretically help make healthier, fitter, and happier just by our contagious example."
"No one is an island. There is always someone watching you leave the house, dig it out, come back, and do it all over again. You are being watched by a roommate, a brother, a spouse. The driver of every passing car. You are being watched by future generations."

Thank you to all  you exuberants and everyone out there who feed my fire!

I want my company to go in many different directions, breaking the mold of doing the same old thing with such a wonderful and nutritious product. Both Skye and myself are outdoor motivated, health conscious athletes, and love being a part of the local community. I am truly excited about all the possibilities working with Mocean365."
