The Tribe comes to town

Mocean365 tribe member "Stompy" recently came down for a couple days of non-stop adventure at the Mocean365 backwoods crib.
We hit up the "DH trail" to "Camptown" to Enchanted Forest then to the new trail, "Burnham Down" which brings you all the way back to town.
We hit up the pump track with the big bikes and then met some folks for a Mocean365 Action Workout where we did an "alchemy" of movements with Burke Mountain as our backdrop. Kind of beats the gym eh?

Jammed at night with new cat Pete McAlenney and got together some fun songs..everything from Rage, to Social D to Rise Against and Smashing Pumpkins, Sublime etc etc. Peter does some amazing GIS work and if you need some you should give him a shout!!

Another ride in the arvo then Stompy went to get in some Wakeboarding crew with the usual Thursday gang(Meghan, O-town, Matty Fred etc) that i opted out of this week to let my wrist heal after a run in with a tree at Highland Mountain. Instead i lead another workout at the East Burke town field and got home to do some more log work, prepping logs for the new addition Vange has going on. Stompy got back and we tortured the wakeboarding crew with another jam with Stomp going hard on the vocals during some Beasties and some original songs he dug up.

Got some trail and dirt jump work done too with some new lines going in all around. Had Stompdog rally his sick new KTM dirt bike up and down the trail while i cut and trimmed to help beat it in. I'll get some pics of the work soon so you can plan your next riding trip right here!

Friday night had a jam with a new band project i'm in led by Scotty Raymond aka "Eskae one ", one of the partners at Kingdom Outdoors/Indigenous Board Shop. We had DJ Transplante playing with us that night which was incredible. Great humble dude and very talented. Lloyd Dugger kept it all together with his mad talents and Matt added the dark guitar while i tried to just lay it down as Scotty turned out sick rhyme after rhyme! stay tuned for more on the new project. think soul, jazz, rock, hip hop blend.

Yesterday got a bunch of work done then hit the mountain with Knight of the IdeRide crew. rode most of the road up to the mtn then we pushed our bikes straight up then rallied down "J-Bar" and "Burnham Down".
Pretty sweet few days..didn't make much money but damn had some fun. Got a couple shots here and there of Stompy rocking the Bern and Peter but nothing crazy.

Real world strength and "fitness"

Just the word "fitness" at times drives me nuts because of its overuse and general cheesy connotations in the training field. my approach to it has been from day one, to improve other aspects of my life, namely how I'm able to move, react, and perform in my day to day.

Now this is finally reaching home with some, that what you do for training how you do your workouts and approach your "fitness" will effect your live positively! Its more than the silly glitz and glamor of "six pack abs" and "fat burning" and all the related industry jargon BS.

Those things are merely a byproduct bonus in my opinion. Can you work all day whether you are pounding nails, chasing kids or punching a keyboard pain free? When it comes time to play, do you have the endurance to fully enjoy the experience, whatever it may be?

We are living in a world where specialization is becoming more commonplace which in my opinion is very dangerous. Great you can design software but can you cut your own firewood? You can build a new deck on your house but can you write a short story? And to relate to training, you have "six pack abs" but can you climb a tree, dig a ditch or train without rest for an hour straight? I hope so to all of those questions!

Take a hard look at your "fitness" and see where and how it positively affects your life and those around you. Look outside of the box and get out of the gym and into the woods. If you don't have equipment, go find some in the woods or at the dump, make it. If you want to get in shape or better shape, JUST DO IT!

This is not the time for specialization but rather an acceptance of new experiences and challenges in regards to your "fitness". run, jump, roll, push, pull, react, stabilize, play, reach, balance, throw, fight, ride, try, read, bend, carry heavy loads and remember we are all animals and kids at heart. When you start accepting these many challenges then you begin to understand real world fitness and function and training with a purpose. SO GO DO IT!!!!!!

Now!

Mocean365 helps with new trail

Here is a post from one of our partners, IdeRide. check out that Mocean365 hoodie i'm rocking..get one today!

"On Sunday, May 31 at 9:00 am twenty hardcore freeriders met at the Burke mtn base lodge parking lot. The goal, to build the long anticipated trail that will connect J-Bar to the summit.

"Despite near constant rain volunteers came from near and far and included some of VT's best professional trailbuilders such as Hardy Avery, Stowe's trail guru and Aaron Codling of New England Freeride. Headed up by KT's own John Worth, This trail building machine left an awesome section of trail in its wake.
There is much work left to be done with Sundays labor yielding only an eighth of the total trail length. The next volunteer day is Sunday, June 14, see you there!

Introducing the Sinister F-Bomb

Been riding Sinister's since 2005 and rate the r-9 as my favorite bike of all time. the r-9 was getting a little long in the tooth and recent MTB Hall of Fame inductee "Frank the Welder" was looking to change things up. My ideal bike is a big bike that you can still pedal and would fit into the "freeride" category if you buy the term. the R-9 pedals very well for a big bike but...could be better. The Sinister Gruitr seems to be very popular but not quite enough travel for me and the Splinter series were fun but again low in the travel. My thinking with this bike was that FTW has finally made a bike that with the right setup could be my ultimate big guy, big bike. Frank got to work...
First up, he simplified and made the bike easier to build, maintain , laterally stiffer, while shaving weight. And lateral stiffness? Holy Shit batman this thing is out of control stiff which should make it track like a monster right?!....more on that soon. This review is based on my initial ride and more testing will really see what its all about.

First ride on the new machine was yesterday and though it was pretty much a X-C ride, it served as a good test with windy, flowy trails with lots of tight and low spots. my frame is a large and when you're sitting on it, the cockpit felt pretty tight or tighter than you'd think. pedaling out onto the trail head, it was very obvious very quick that this thing was for real. Took off like a ra%%d ape and just tracked straight ahead as i dropped into "poundcake" a trail that widely contributes to the Kingdom Trails network being named "Best Flow" in the US by "Bike Magazine". It never occured to me that the bike was "overkill" for the trail cuz it just hooked up and allowed me to instantly start railing turns and pumping the trail for all i'm worth.
Smiling the whole time as the bike just sailed through it all...i instantly thought "this is the bike i've always wanted"!
With the bike setup like mine, namely with a single crown like the Rock Shox Totem and a 32 T front ring on it, this is a "big boys big bike' that should prove to be very versatile. tomorrow will be a bigger test at the Highland Mountain Bike Park but my initial ride was pure Nirvana!!!!
big thanks to FTW, Sinister Bikes, Nick at SRAM, Adam at Pro-Tec, Ron and Paul at I-Ride Bike Shop and to dirt for being there.

Prehabilitation to Avoid Rehabilitation!

Lots of my friends especially in the action sports genre often say "nah, i'd like to work out but i get all the workout i need on my bike or board" or whatever they do. that's fine but the one of the best benefits of training and getting in quality workouts is to AVOID INJURY! now if you screw up a line and tag a tree well your pretty much shit outta luck and your gonna get worked. But if you are constantly getting sprains and strains and overuse injuries then maybe taking a look at adding a comprehensive workout may be worth a while.
One of the best things you could do for your body if your a pro right down to weekend warrior recreational athlete is take care of your JOINTS! and not talking the green kind that that make all the pain go away and should be legalized but the ones that are responsible for moving that body!
These joints get dry, they get worked and time takes it's toll so its important to give them some love. A great approach is to work them through their intended range of motion as often as possible. This encourages joint nutrition, lubrication and gets them ready to move!
I could sit here and explain this till blue in the face but instead i'll pop in some visual enlightenment that is easy to follow. John Sifferman has a great video on his site and he is strong believer as i'm becoming in the work of the amazing, Scott Sonnen. Just began Scott's video series," Ageless Mobility" that is incredible! Here's John's video..http://johnsifferman.com/blog/joint-mobility-head-to-toe-in-5-minutes-or-less-with-john-sifferman/

Think about dynamic warmups as well which in my opinion, is a vital component of Pre-habilitation.

Ok, thats my spiel today...so think PRE-HAB BEFORE RE-HAB!

Vermont movie night wrap up

We had a great time at the VMBA movie night in Burlington VT over the weekend. They showed New World Disorder 9" which was another masterpiece by the Freeride Entertainment crew.
IdeRide and Mocean365 were sponsors of the event and rallied up to the show in the new IdeRide bus which was rad and had plenty of seating for the physically and mentally challenged(had to be there).
VMBA is doing great work and make mountain biking possible in many areas..without them we'd be screwed!
alright..the kid that won the longboard that we raffled off had the best "fro" ever!
check it out!
