Mocean365 Crew Gears for 2012 Spartan Beast in Killington VT
This past year a crew of us went to compete in the Spartan Beast in Killington VT. It is a 13 mile obstacle race that climbs up and down Killington Peak(3rd highest in VT) many times interspersed with obstacles and challenges along the way. The times ran between 3-6 hours depending on levels.
This year we have added some more people to the crew and would love to see more come aboard. This is a very doable challenge as it is in September of 2012 giving you plenty of time to train.
We also will be offering Mocean365 Spartan Race training ongoing and will be organizing day trips here and there in between the current members offering people the chance to train with each other and of course hang out and bond with a great crew.
Also we collectively will be guiding each other with nutrition and health info, recipes and other avenues to keep the stoke high. Many of the current crew is based in the northeast kingdom of Vt where Mocean365 offers most of our classes and movement curriculum but we will be adding members from beyond. The best way to get involved if you are unsure? grab a friend and come aboard and then make new friends.
Some on the team will be doing it with other members, meaning running the race at the same pace while others will be trying to push themselves to new levels at their own pace so there should be an option for everyone. We are also encouraging other people to try out a Spartan Sprint which is a much shorter version(5k) that is a good beta test to gauge your fitness level for the Spartan Beast.
Most of the current crew is training with Mocean365 either within a class, one on one or small group or, all of the above. We are selectively adding new people to train who are ready for new challenges but need some guidance along the way. Contact Mocean365 at mocean365@gmail.com to learn more about rates and services. keep in mind, we can also work with people remotely, designing programs and offering guidance and tips to keep you on track and we offer comprehensive package that include movement instruction and full nutrition counseling and guidance provided by our partners at Rootswise. As always we offer sliding scale payment options so we will work with people regardless of their financial situation. The only thing we require is commitment and a desire to push yourself to new levels!
Check the video below to see more of what to expect. now get off your ass, your couch or whatever and JUST DO IT!

Surfing and Sharks
Well as a die hard surfer, i've had some pretty interesting experiences with sharks over the years. one of my most memorable was in Panama surfing a reef. Just me and a stranger trading off waves at a pumping spot. He casually mentions in between waves.."hey mate, check er out, we've got some company", pointing down to the reef below. I look down and sure as s%^t there are two reef sharks circling underneath just as clear as day. We stayed and surfed for a while but it was a little spooky paddling back to my friends boat afterwards. Had plenty of others too over the years. This is THEIR domain and i'm blessed to be able to share it. This movie looks like it will be pretty interesting..

Getting Out and About
The weather has been pretty damn sweet lately here in New England and perfect for outdoor movement sessions. Doesn't really matter what you do, its just great to be outside whether you're working, playing or just chilling.
Meg just made her Daily Practice blog over at Rootswise about getting outside. Its surprising that it even has to be issued as a challenge but given today's world its unfortunately more rare than you think. We weren't allowed in the house when we were kids but now seems many parents are focused on protecting their kids from any sort of positive interaction with the many elements of nature and natural playgrounds.
Well we snapped a few pics today during our fun movement session up here in VT. nothing earth shattering, just two friends playing together using whatever terrain you can find. And that's the lesson here..keep it simple.
Get out and play, move and groove and HAVE FUN!

The time is NOW to revolt and inspire.
So there is so much talk right now about change and revolution. And change by the masses can really spark some amazing transformations as history shows. But what does that mean for everyone. Can you be a revolutionary by NOT taking to the streets? The answer it seems is yes. To Revolt can mean many things. You can revolt against the fact that you despise your job and want to spend more time with family and loved ones.
You can revolt and say enough is enough, "I'm gonna get in shape" or "Gonna dust off that guitar and make her sing". And guess what?
That acting of revolting though it may seem personal or even selfish(don't get me started); can have amazing implications and EFFECT on not just your life, but those of others. And that is how change begins. One at a time. Opening eyes and hearts not to bend to YOUR way but for people to find, discover or REDISCOVER their own. The classic, "don't give a man a fish, teach a man to fish" mantra.
The video below may seem to be about one man's selfish journey or may seem like a "surf flick". It seems to me to be much deeper than that and since it has effected me strongly enough to write about it and share it with you then obviously it is causing a REVOLT. Nary a political statement in the whole film but instead the message is one of containing our old friend, "Inspiration.
Watch the video if you get time in your "busy day". Its under 5 minutes long. Watch the whole thing, absorb and reflect. What does it stir in you? Are there fires that need to be rekindled. Unfinished business. Missions that need a "Complete" stamp or new roads to explore? Whatever it is, I wish you the best of luck on your journey and thank you in advance for your gift of inspiration.

The Mechanic
Its one of my jobs to lead and inspire dynamic and natural movement and prepare people to meet their goals, whatever they may be. And in my years doing this, believe me I've heard excuses and whining and complaining. "My knee hurts", "I'm really stressed" or "the weather really gets me down" among a plethora of others. But the people I work with just bring it. This post is dedicated to someone who brings it and is is the first installment in a series highlighting the amazing people I'm blessed to work with.
He pulls in to our meeting spot blasting tunes in his big throaty diesel truck and he jumps out with his steel toed shit kickers on and usually covered in dirt and grease. Its his lunch break so time is of the essence. He kicks off his boots, throws on some shorts and starts his dynamic warmup. "You ready buddy"? I ask and he always responds with a big smile and a "hell yeah" or "bring it on", and we begin.
I put him through the paces. Sometimes we are deep in the woods, gathering boulders from a river to be used as resistance or hanging from rafters in an old pavillion cranking out pullups. Then on to the town sandpile for some brutal climbs and metabolic conditioning. The "mechanic" wants to improve his game. Hone his martial arts(2nd degree black belt). Keep his back strong and work through some past issues. And even though he practically has lived in steel toed boots his whole life, he has embraced going barefoot. Every challenge for the last few months with me, he has been barefoot. "getting better" he says, when I ask him how feet are faring.
You see, the mechanic has some things that don't work like the rest of us. Limited range of motion in his shoulder. Wracked his back pretty good back in the day. And he has one issue that I won't get into here that lets just say, would cause some people to just want to give up and give in. Throw in the proverbial f&^^$%ing towel. But that is not what the Mechanic does. He grits his teeth and he accepts each and every challenge and task I can dish out and handles it with aplomb. He focuses on his breathing and engagement and despite not having much of a cardio base when we started this summer, has made some incredible headway there too. An hour later he is drenched in sweat and has worked in every plane of movement and given 100% on everything. No excuses, no "poor me" and he is always ready for the next challenge even if he has to do it with a little of "his style".
Next time your thinking of giving up,or not giving it 100% think about the Mechanic. And think about others that might only have 1 arm, or 1 leg or no legs or are confined to a wheelchair for the rest of their lives but are still giving it their all. Realize how lucky we all are and never forget how precious and fleeting time is. The Mechanic sure won't.
